How to Select an Informative Topic For Toastmasters Or Your Public Speaking Class - Part 1

If you are enrolled in a public speaking course, attending, a 2-day workshop on presentation skills, or you belong to Toastmasters, you may encounter a stumbling block when it comes to choice of topic. Imagine that you are required to give an informative presentation. What should you talk about?

Your 1st step is to make a list of your interests and your hobbies. What one thing do you do well? Don't limit yourself thinking it is too trivial. One of my students gave an informative presentation on detailing a car which was one of the best and most interesting discourses I have ever heard.

It would also be a good idea to stick to a topic for which you have a fair amount of knowledge. Talking about something that interests you but for which you do not have a lot of information may not be the best move (unless that is part of the requirement for your course). If your subject is something you enjoy, your delivery will be more personal than if your topic has been selected for you.

Be prepared to do some research as well. In doing so, you will not only learn more about your topic but you will also gain additional information that could help build your development with facts as well as quotes and stories. There is nothing wrong in describing an event that happened to someone else even if you don't know that individual. As long as you credit your source, that information is fair game. Of course, if you actually quote someone, you must acknowledge the writer of said material.

Should you choose to discuss the most important person in your life, your favorite pet, or the best car you have ever driven, the amount of research you will need to do will be little, if any, because these topics are purely subjective.

While my '92 Cutlass was the best car I have ever owned in terms of reliability, others who have driven that make and model may not have encountered those same reliability statistics. Were I to talk about that particular model, I would definitely do some research and see how well other Cutlasses of that year performed.

You have a wealth of topics at your disposal that you are not even aware of. I've heard about LP's (long-playing albums), judo, recipes, painting a room, beer pong, installing a fence, patenting an invention, smiling versus frowning, and how to brew a great cup of coffee. And that list goes on and on.

Indeed, you may not do everything well in life; but, without a doubt, there is probably something you do better than many others. If you don't feel confident discussing your abilities in that respect, talk about something or someone that interests you or for which you have great respect. Selecting a topic is not as difficult as you think - just open up your mind.
